Rules for bringing bicycles and scooters

You are welcome to bring your bicycle and scooter on public transport, but the rules and prices for buses, trains, and metro are different. Find out what applies to your journey here.

Buses and harbour buses

You are welcome to bring your bicycle or electric scooter onboard Movia's buses and harbour buses free of charge until June 30th 2023.  

To secure space for all travellers, the following exceptions apply: 

  • It is not allowed to bring bicycles or scooters during rush hour in bus lines 1-100 and S-buses (e.g. 500S). Rush hour is from Monday to Friday from 07:00-09:00 and 15:30-17:30. IMPORTANT! Even if you enter the bus before rush hour, you are not allowed to finish your journey with your bicycle or electric scooter during that time slot. 
  • It is not allowed to bring along a bicycle or electric scooter on Friday and Saturday nights between 00.30-04.30 in night buses and bus lines 1A, 2A, 4A, 5C, 6A, 7A and 9A. Night buses are buses that end with N. On all other bus lines, you are welcome to bring your bicycle or scooter at night time. 
  • Mini-buses, that measure under 12 meters, will not accept bicycles or scooters. The following buses are considered mini-buses: 71, 72, 74, 77, 78, 151, 152, 196, 197, 198, 199, 243, 342, 499, 513, 571, 572, 585, 586, 712, 721, 724, 751, 752, 755, 760, 761, 762, 771, 772, 773, 774, 778, 791, 792, 834, 835, 840, 841, 847, 848, 851 and 875. Please be aware that some bus lines might be served by regular buses as well as mini-buses.

The bicycle or electric scooter must be placed in the middle of the bus and attached to a harness.

There is a maximum capacity of two units per bus unless otherwise indicated on the bus. A unit is a bicycle, electric scooter, wheelchair or pram. The customer who boards first has priority.

S-train

You can bring your bicycle or scooter on the S-train during all hours of operation.

However, you must not get off or on with a bicycle or scooter at Nørreport Station on weekdays between 7.00 and 9.00 and between 15.30 and 17.30.

You are not permitted to bring bicycles or scooters on train buses that are used as substitutes during track work or route changes.

Metro

You need to buy a bicycle ticket when you bring your bicycle or scooter on the Metro.

Bicycles and scooters are not permitted on the Metro on weekdays between 7.00 and 9.00 and between 15.30 and 17.30.

Regional train, InterCity, InterCity Lyn and Øresund train

You can bring your bicycle or scooter on the S-train during all hours of operation.

You need to buy a bicycle ticket when you bring your bicycle or scooter on the regional train, InterCity, InterCity Lyn and Øresund train.

You are not permitted to bring bicycles or scooters on train buses that are used as substitutes during track work or route changes.

There are special rules and prices for bringing bicycles and scooters on trains between Denmark and Germany.

Local Train

You can bring your bicycle or electric scooter free of charge on Local Trains. 

Foldable bicycles, children’s bicycles, cargo bikes, etc.

Folding bicycles

You may bring folding bicycles that occupy less than 30 x 60 x 100 cm on trains, buses and Metro in the Copenhagen Metropolitan area without the purchase of a bicycle ticket.

The bicycle must be transported folded throughout the journey and kept fully covered.

Children’s bicycles

Children’s bicycles are considered to be toys, and are therefore free to bring if they do not exceed baggage measurements (30 x 60 x 100 cm), and if there is at least one paying customer accompanying the children’s bicycle.

Bicycle trailers and large bicycles

In general, you may not bring bicycle trailers, Christiania bikes, long john bikes, cargo bikes and other large bikes on the bus, train and metro.

Special bikes can, however, be brought on the DSB Øresund train across Øresund between Tårnby and Hyllie stations.

It is not permitted to bring special bikes on other parts of the DSB Øresund line.

Segways and petrol vehicles

It is not permitted to bring Segways or vehicles powered by petrol or other highly flammable fuel.

Tandem bicycles

You cannot bring a tandem bicycle on the Metro, buses, local rail trains and international trains.

Tandem bicycles can be brought on S-trains and Øresund trains.

In the case of Regional trains, Interregional trains, InterCity and InterCityLyn, tandem bicycles may be brought on certain trains when there is sufficient access and the personnel consider there to be sufficient space available.

The price is 2 times the price that would be paid for a regular bicycle.

Customers on DSB trains who are covered by the Escort Scheme or have identification cards from the Danish Association of the Blind or the Institute for the Blind and Partially Sighted (IBOS) pay the same fare for a tandem bicycle as for a regular bicycle.

Rules for foldable bicycles and scooters 

If your foldable bicycle or scooter is larger than 100x60x30 cm. it corresponds to bringing a bicycle, and you, therefore, need to follow the guidelines concerning bringing a bicycle or scooter onboard public transport, which are listed above. 

Rules for luggage

You may bring suitcases, backpacks, bags or the like free of charge if there is room for them. The dimensions of the individual piece of luggage must not exceed 30 x 60 x 100 cm. The staff may give further instructions on where to put the luggage. Whether there is enough room and whether the luggage is a nuisance are always determined by the staff.

You may bring musical instruments, children’s scooters, foldable wheelchairs, skis and poles, snowboards, small sledges and toboggans if they do not create a nuisance.

Folding bicycles can also be taken on board in packaging. The packaging must completely enclose the bicycle. Folding bicycle trailers where wheels are removed can also be taken. The total size of a folding bicycle or trailer must not exceed the carry-on baggage size.

The companies only transport the baggage that the individual customer can take with them.

Rules for animals

Small dogs and other small animals carried in a bag or cage are regarded as hand luggage and may be taken free of charge. The dimensions of the bag or cage must not exceed 30 x 60 x 100 cm and the animal must remain in the bag or cage during the journey.

If you are travelling with a dog that is too big to fit in a bag or a cage you must purchase a children’s ticket for the dog. The dog must be on the floor during the entire journey, and it must be kept on a leash and be under your control. Guide dogs or service dogs may always be taken on board free of charge. The dog must carry the symbol ‘man with a white stick’, ‘dog’s head and hand’ or an ID vest (provided the customer can show a special ID card for the dog).

Customers with animals must show consideration for other customers and follow instructions from staff. The animal must not behave in a threatening manner and is not permitted on the seats.

Metro

In consideration of customers with allergies, dogs are not permitted on the 6 front and back seats in the train. One dog per person may be taken on the Metro.

Train

On some trains, animals are referred to in specific sections. See the train signage.

When travelling with InterCity or InterCityLyn trains, buy a place ticket for your dog. This way, you make sure that there is room for the dog on the floor in front of the seat.

Buses

You cannot bring dogs on A-buses, with the exception of small dogs carried in a bag or transport box. Dogs can always be taken on A-buses in Køge, Roskilde, Næstved, Ringsted, Holbæk and Helsingør.

Large dogs cannot be taken on other buses in Greater Copenhagen in zones 1-4, 30-33 and 40-44 on weekdays between 07.00 and 09.00 or between 15.30 and 17.30.

The front half of the bus is an animal-free area. You may bring a maximum of one dog per person.
